I was pretty excited when Afi Bakery opened for business earlier in the year because that meant hot bread for me everyday. Afi Bakery specializes in the production of hot bread, snacks, cakes and other popular Nigerian snacks. I had enquired about wheat bread at some point (I was on a diet lol) but they didn’t have any. I finally had the opportunity to buy bread from Afi’s and my experience was a bit disappointing to say the least.
I arrived Afi in the early afternoon and was met by an attendant who seemed confused. I explained to her that I wanted to get bread and she showed me the various types they had. There was the Student Loaf, Family Loaf and the Sardine bread which cost 100, 230 and 150 Naira respectively.

I was pretty excited because Sardine Bread was available, so I decided to purchase that. The whole transaction took less than 10 minutes, which was impressive.
Verdict on the bread:
Here comes the disappointment and excitement turned sour. The bread was no where near fresh and the sardine filling was spoilt! The sardine bread was hard which meant it could have been at least 2 days old. I had to throw the bread away and I totally hate wasting food.
I will rate Afi Bakery a 3 over 10 only because the transaction process was short. However, I will recommend the following:
- Distribution: Afi is located in the heart of Yaba and is surrounded by several institutions. I’m sure if these baked items are being distributed to other outlets for sale, they won’t last so long in the bakery
- I think Afi should make as much as they can sell and not over produce
- Afi should probably quit the sardine bread. Maybe if I had purchased the normal student loaf, I wouldn’t have hated it as much.
Regardless, I will avoid Afi all together and save myself from food poisoning.
This is what I will call a cottage industry. They seem to serve only white bread. Need to improve on variety for the health conscious and for the younger generation with sweet tooth. I thought it would save me going all the way to Underground or unilag to purchase bread. It has not worked so…
I have encountered:
~arriving during the business hour to meet there is no bread
~there is no change and not making efforts for a customer that came just for the purpose of buying bread
~Changing the prices arbitrarily from 230 to 250 and then to 230 again.
I would like to give it time to improve its services. They could invest in a business consultant to not only give customers satisfaction, but also turn the place into a money spinner.
