I think we have the best chinese food in Nigeria so I’m always excited to grab chinese when I’m home. However, with the plethora of dining options nowadays, I find that I don’t really go out of my way to get chinese when I’m home. But, I got a 25% off discount to visit El Gusto so off we went.

Location: It was a bit difficult to locate El Gusto because the address on the flyer we had wasn’t very clear. We ended up figuring out that we had to go to Osborne Estate in Ikoyi to find this place.

Parking: Parking here’s a little weird…I can’t really explain it. But there’s space for about 6 cars.

Ambiance: El Gusto is located on the ground floor of a hotel, Springpark Yaad Hotel. The space looks like it’d be great for family lunch after Sunday church service.

Menu Options: There were two different menus; Continental/African and Chinese. Entrees cost between N3000 – N9000. Cocktails cost about N2500 on average, and chapman cost N1500.

What I liked:

Our entrees tasted good. Solid 8.5/10.
We got 2 extra chicken spring rolls on the house. The spring rolls tasted decent and were served in about 20 minutes.

What I didn’t like:

Each menu was like a mini textbook and not at all appealing to look through. I particularly detest restaurants that have way too many food options, especially in Nigeria. I’m of the opinion that most food options would either be unavailable or not taste good. In the case of El Gusto, we’d initially ordered mayo spring rolls and combination fried noodles and neither of those were available.

We ordered combination singapore noodles and curry chicken and it took about an hour for the dishes to be served, whereas we were told it’d only take 15 minutes. Additionally, the presentation of the food was very very poor. 0/10 for presentation!

Our bill had hidden fees of 20% (10% service charge, 5% VAT, 5% Lagos State Sales Tax.) which we had no clue about prior to ordering. The bill did not even have a breakdown explaining the extra charges; 20% was just automatically added to each item on the list…imagine! I had to speak to a manager about this one because it really took me by surprise.

And what’s up with the manual calculations?!?!

The staff had “Loyal” by Chris Brown and “Hello” by Adele on repeat. I had to ask if we could listen to some other songs because we were there for a pretty long time!
Wifi was available, however the waitress had to call a manager to get the passcode. The manager refused to give me the passcode and politely insisted he enter the information directly into my phone.
Once the ice in my cup had melted, I saw so many unknown particles in the glass cup! I was just grateful I didn’t drink from it, but made me wonder if the same ice was used in my chapman.

I rate El Gusto a 3/10. I wasn’t impressed at all. I understand the business is about a month old and may still be figuring stuff out, but if they continue this way I’m not sure they’d be around for too long.

El Gusto has the potential of being a nice restaurant but as usual in Nigeria, Management is the problem.

My experience was similar to this post and i agree 100% with everything written on here.

i wont recommend this place to anyone….not worth the trouble.
