Update 2/9/16: Business is permanently closed.
I’d been hearing about this place and their delicious grilled fish for forever! Well, I finally tried it a few weeks back and it’s ah-may-zing! Definitely worth all the hype, but….. Let me start from the beginning.
My sister and I were headed to MMA and thought it won’t be a bad idea to grab some food by the airport..so we decided to go to Express since it’s in Ajao Estate (which is about 3 miles from the airport).
We were meeting up with friends so by the time we got to Express they had already placed an order for a plate of whole grilled cat fish and chips, and were there for about 30 minutes before we arrived.
Express is located within a compound and next to a school it seemed like. There isn’t parking per se but one could park on the street. It’s a really narrow and busy street though so just a heads-up. There seemed to be way too many people in the compound so I’m not sure what else goes on in there, but Express is located to the left once through the gates.
There’s outdoor and indoor sitting. The outdoor space has a bunch of chairs with ceiling fans and a bar. We opted to sit indoors. The indoor space was super dark and we loved it! There was good music playing as well.
As we waited for fish and chips, we decided to order drinks. Chapman cost 1k, and a bottle of Star cost #700 (lil weird fact…a bottle of Star at this same location cost #500 if you’re seated outside).
So we waited..and waited..and there was no fish and chips. So we ordered a plate of Nkwobi (cost 1k5). The Nkwobi was on point! Tasted so good!! Sorry no pictures; my sister dug in too quickly!
Our fish and chips finally arrived (after 1hour and 45mins)!! But it was deeee-licious!! The fish was well seasoned and tasted soooo good. And it cost just 1k.
Fish ‘n Chips
Side Note: Fish and chips came with coleslaw. I was advised against eating the coleslaw so I steered clear.
Overall, I’d recommend Express’ grilled fish, but just plan to wait for a minimum of like 45minutes since it’s made to order. I think they serve other things too but I only tried the Nkwobi and Fish; both of which were delicious. I hear Express might be moving to a different location come December 2014. I’ll be sure to keep y’all posted.
Disclaimer: Only go to Ajao or neighboring areas if you’ve got like 4/5 hours to spare prior to your flight. You’ve got to keep an eye on traffic on that airport road, unless you’d almost certainly miss your flight!
Additional notes: Service wasn’t bad but I’d have liked for the fish to not arrive after an hour and 45mins! We paid with their POS…it was acting up at first but pulled through eventually. 🙂
