My sister and I didn’t enjoy our meal at Dubliner , plus she had cravings for fish and chips, so I suggested Old Skool Gen Spot in National Stadium Surulere because my friend had said a lot of good things about the place.
Locating the bar was very difficult. There was no signage, however, the gateman gave directions. After so many turns, the Taxify driver finally found it.
PARKING :
There is ample parking for more than 20 cars. Street parking is available but limited.
AMBIANCE/SEATING:
Indoor and outdoor seating is available. Old Skool Gen Spot is ideal for chilling with friends. It is not romantic, and is not fun if you visit alone. Old school jams, think 70/80/90s, were played. A funny MC was also hosting the night show. There were a lot of performances like dancing, fire eating and singing competitions.
MY EXPERIENCE AT OLD SKOOL GEN SPOT:
My sister and I immediately saw the catfish on the grill. We inquired how long it would take for it to be ready, and we were told about 45 minutes. About an hour and a half after, the catfish was ready. We ordered for drinks while waiting. My sister had a bottle of water, while I had a bottle of smirnoff. The drinks cost 600NGN in total.
Prior to ordering, we had asked if they had a working POS as we didn’t have cash on us. The attendant assured us and we went on ordering.
FOOD :
The catfish and chips were AH-MA-ZING! It is legit the best fish and chips I’ve ever had! The fish was well grilled with just the right amount of pepper while the chips were properly fried. It cost 2,700NGN.
SERVICE:
After devouring our fish and chips, it was time to pay, then wahala started! The POS was not working as we tried 4 different bank cards and there is no ATM inside National Stadium, so the only option was for one of the attendants to follow us to withdraw. My sister then suggested we transfer the money to their bank account. Our bill was 3,300NGN. We asked for a bank account, then the attendant directed us to the manager.
Apparently, we were supposed to pay for the fish and the drinks separately because the items came from different vendors. The manager didn’t want to give us his account number, or the business account number, so we were asked to pay into the attendant’s account. After much drama, we paid the attendant the 600NGN for drinks with cash, and decided to concentrate on the fish seller, whose bill was 2,700NGN. He bluntly asked us to transfer 2,000NGN to his account and pay 700NGN in cash as he couldn’t withdraw 2,700NGN via the ATM. We eventually did as he asked because it was beginning to cause a scene.
OVERALL:
Although the fish was delicious, I rate them a 6/10 basically because payment was a huge wahala! It was particularly annoying because the manager wasn’t helpful.
Old Skool Gen Spot is a cool place, I will definitely come back but this time with enough cash as their POS is not trustworthy.
Oh my days!!! Old school fish and chips is just a 10/10. It wasn’t too dry it was just “hexactly” what I needed. Yes and the chips was real fresh potatoes. Not that type they refrigerate that doesn’t taste good I would try it over and over. Their workers are sha confused. They were actually behaving like they couldn’t understand English language.
