It was my friend’s birthday and she handed me the duty of getting her a good, reasonably priced birthday cake. Apparently, she wasn’t ready to spend too much on a birthday cake, so Cookie Jar was out of the question.
The CEO of Ruchinas Confectioneries had been on my BBM for a while and her cakes always looked very attractive so I decided to give Ruchinas a try. I showed my friend some pictures of Ruchinas cakes and my friend was impressed with her creativity.
I personally know it can take a while to get a reply to a BBM message so, I decided to give Ruchinas cake a call. A very nice lady answered the phone and explained that she would read my BBM message if I sent it at that particular moment. Turns out BBM is the preferred choice of communication for Ruchinas.
I explained that I needed a 10 inch vanilla double layered cake and was told it’d cost 6,000 Naira. Of course I didn’t want the cake to be boring, so I decided to add Oreos, Cherries, M and M’s and Almonds, which cost 200 Naira, 800 Naira, 1,000 Naira, and 500 Naira respectively. In total, the dream cake cost 8,500 Naira. I also enquired about delivery and was asked to pay 1,000 Naira for delivery to Yaba. This brought the total cost of the cake to 9,500 Naira (not too bad if you ask me).
There is no pay on delivery option, so I had to pay into a UBA account to confirm booking (I made payment 3 days prior to the delivery date). On the delivery day, there was a slight delay due to traffic but the cake came through. It looked so good and smelt delicious.
Verdict On The Cake:
The cake was either a sponge cake or bread cake. Tbh, I really couldn’t tell what type of cake it was especially as it tasted different from the normal cakes I’ve had in the past. I liked the cake and thought it had the right amount of sugar and tasted different in a good way. However, my friends didn’t like the cake because it was definitely different from what they were used to.
I will rate Ruchinas a 7.5 over 10. I was impressed with the creativity, affordability and prompt response. The cab man that handled the delivery was really nice and funny. I’d have liked a heads-up about the type of cake though. I might use Ruchinas Confectioneries services again, but will specify the type of cake (i.e. not bread-like cake).
