A new Palms branch opened up in my area and there was this fuss to visit. Basically, just like the other Palms, there are quite a number of shopping outlets inclusive of Shoprite Sango-Ota and Max. So after the new year celebration, I decided to see for myself.

Parking:

As usual, there is ample parking within the compound and street parking is unnecessary.

My Shoprite Sango-Ota Experience:

The Crowd –

On entering Shoprite Sango-Ota, the crowd was terrifying. The queue at the payment section was unreasonable and the shelves were empty as a lot of items were sold out. Even ice-cream was sold out. I picked up the small items I could find and proceeded to pay but the queue was out of this world. In fact, there was a special queue for bread buyers and that one was the longest (and they had just 3 attendants on ground to handle that queue.)

Customer Service –

I chose the shortest queue I could find. Still we were about 10-15 on it and it moved as slow as a snail. I stood there for about 1 hour! Finally, it was almost my turn and a lady in front of me wanted to pay. Apparently she had 1,500NGN with her and her bill was 1,510NGN. She asked the cashier if she could remove some items and that was the beginning of trouble. Without uttering a word, the cashier turned her back to her and started staring into space. We were all confused. So she asked the attendant what the problem was and urged her to attend to us as quickly as possible. She ignored her and just kept looking lost.

After some minutes, she replied her in Yoruba with “emi ko ni mo’n da yin duro oo, eyin le n da won duro” that is, you are the one delaying them oo, not me.

I was irritated! She said it in such a nonchalant attitude and no regard for customer care. No courtesy! A security lady came over to help defuse the situation (at least so I thought), however the cashier whispered something into her ears and the security lady left us. While all this was happening, there was no apology nor explanation from the attendant.

After some minutes, she explains that she can’t take out an already inputted item and we would have to wait for the manager, who was nowhere to be found. The manager arrived about 10 minutes later to inform us that the attendants are not allowed to change an inputted order. I was pretty confused because in all my days of going to Shoprite, I had never heard of that before.

To clarify my confusion, I had asked if it was particular to the branch or if it was nationwide. She barked her answer and stated it was nationwide. She even went ahead to ask me If I knew what Shoprite was, or if IT was my first Shoprite experience. After much delay, the problem was fixed.

OVERALL:

I am a regular Shoprite customer. In fact, the Surulere branch is my go to. I have taken inputted items out on several occasions and I didn’t need to go through all that drama. I rate Shoprite Sango-Ota a 1/10. Empty shelves in Shoprite is a no no. To crown it all, the attendant, security lady and the manager lack simple customer service. Communication is very key and they need to be trained on how to relate with their customers.
